What is Whole Body Vibration?

The Vibration Plate is a sophisticated exercise and therapeutic wellness machine that uses vibrational technology based on decades of research and development.

Whole Body Vibration (WBV) uses the principles of Acceleration Training to stimulate the bodyís natural response to vibration. The power plate produces a vibration at varying hertz (times per second) through which energy is transferred to the body, producing a muscle stretch reflex, which results in the muscles repetitively contracting and relaxing with each vibration. The vibration stimulates not only active, slow-twitch muscle fiber that moves our bodies in physical activity but also the hard to reach fast-twitch muscle fiber that is normally not activated except in high intensity bursts of movement. This results in 98-100% of muscle response at a rate of up to 3000 times per minute during a session versus 40-60% of muscle use during traditional exercise.

The power plate vibration machine can produce equal, if not better, results than conventional training methods such as weight lifting in far less time, with less effort and with much less stress on the joints, tendons and ligaments. History of Whole Body Vibration

The Russian space program used WBV in an effort to stop or reverse bone and muscle tissue loss cosmonauts experienced in space due to a lack of gravity. As a result of WBV successfully imitating gravity, the Russians were able to stay in space for months longer than the U.S.

The world started seeing WBVís effectiveness when Russia won all of the Gold in the 1960 Olympics. But it wasnít until the Berlin Wall came down in 1989 that their secret of whole body vibration was revealed and this discovery led the way for other European countries to apply the vibrational training concept to athletics and fitness.

Within the last few years, WBV notoriety and popularity has spread in America as well. I started having neck and shoulder pain 15 years ago, from a compressed C-6 vertebrae in my neck from white-water rafting-gone wrong. Since then I have spent so much time and money at chiropractors but was never really pain-free. Even turning my head while sleeping would wake me up with the pain. I was just accustomed to living with constant achiness in my neck, not being able to turn my head fully, and going to the chiropractor every 4-6 weeks (sometimes more when it would flare up).
    Six months ago I started training on the whole body vibration machine 2-3 times a week and noticed almost immediately that I could look over my shoulder while driving! The mobility in my neck continued to get better and the pain is hardly noticeable—just occasionally—and I do some neck stretches on the machine and it goes away! A sweat-free 15 minute workout on the vibration platform may seem easy but is actually very intense and the equivalent to one hour of strength training.

Just a few minutes of stretching on the machine will improve flexibility and range of motion similar to the benefits of a deep stretch yoga class.

Bone Density - Prevent or Reverse Osteoporsis

When standing on a whole body vibration platform the muscles are stimulated to respond by contracting reflexively in response to each vibration and these contractions pull and stimulate bone. However all of this occurs without any impact or external load so it is very safe. Studies have shown that whole body vibration directly stimulates increase in bone density and bone health, and bone health can be stimulated by as little as 15 minutes of use per week.

Another suggested reason for increases in bone mass is that vibration alters fluid flow, both in blood vessels and in lymphatic vessels.

Osteoporosis is one of the most common complications of aging. Bone mineral density in the hip of postmenopausal women increased about 1% with six months of vibration exercise. In young women, increases in spine bone density of 3.9% and thigh bone density of 2.9% occurred after twelve months of vibration training. Benefits happened from as little as 2 minutes per day of training. In another study, 70 postmenopausal women performed vibration exercise for one year and bone mineral density increased by 3.35%.

Vibration exercise improves bone mineral density equivalent to what the most effective drugs can accomplish. Although medication may prevent the loss of bone, it can be detrimental after continued use (fosamax causes bone fractures) and it is unable to provide any of the other benefits of vibration exercise including improvements in strength, balance, neuromuscular function, and quality of life.


Heredity, skin thickness, gender, the amount and distribution of body fat, and age can all influence the extent to which cellulite is present or visible.The lumpiness of cellulite is caused by fat deposits that push and distort the connective tissues beneath skin, leading to the characteristic dimpling of the skin.

The improved circulation and lymphatic drainage experienced with WBV assists in flushing out the toxins trapped in the fat cells and effectively remove these wastes from the body while softening the connective tissue to normal elasticity.
